Pacific Leaders Unite for Bold Policing Initiative

Pacific leaders have officially endorsed the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI), aiming to enhance collective peace and security across the region. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that this initiative is crucial as the region faces numerous challenges, asserting that it is the leaders’ duty to establish a robust Pacific Policing Initiative.

The PPI has garnered support from countries including Palau, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Fiji. It is designed to improve the capabilities of Pacific nations in addressing law enforcement and internal security needs, as well as to provide mutual assistance in emergencies.

As part of the initiative, there will be the establishment of up to four regional police training Centres of Excellence throughout the Pacific. These centers will focus on advancing policing skills through specialized training and operational support for police personnel in the region.

Additionally, the Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG), a multi-national police capability force with a pool of trained officers, will be available for deployment in response to specific needs in Pacific countries, such as for managing major events or providing extra resources during crises. A PPI Policing Development and Coordination Hub will be set up in Brisbane to facilitate training and prepare for any deployments.

Australia has pledged approximately $400 million over five years to support the PPI and cover infrastructure expenses for the new policing Centres of Excellence. This initiative represents a significant step towards achieving the peace and security objectives outlined in the Pacific Islands Forum’s 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, further building on insights gained from the recent Solomons International Assistance Force.

Talks about creating an integrated regional policing capability began at the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police meeting earlier this year. Pacific police are in the final stages of designing the PPI to ensure it is developed by and for the Pacific.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting the ongoing cooperation among Pacific police forces to enhance regional safety. He reiterated that a united approach to improving capabilities and cooperation among Pacific police benefits all nations and their communities.

Albanese stated, “This is a Pacific-led, Australia-backed initiative that harnesses our collective strengths. We are stronger together, and the security of the Pacific is a shared responsibility among our nations.”
