“Pacific Leaders Unite for a Sustainable Fisheries Future”

Pacific leaders convened at the Honiara Summit, held in the Solomon Islands from February 24 to 27, 2025, to enhance cooperation in addressing Sustainable Development Goal 14.4, which focuses on achieving sustainable fisheries. Gathering approximately 400 delegates, including leaders and representatives from Pacific nations, development partners, and intergovernmental organizations, the summit served as a critical platform for discussing the importance of sustainable fisheries management.

Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Jeremiah Manele, officially launched the summit, emphasizing the significance of collective action in overcoming challenges related to ocean health, including climate change, overfishing, illegal fishing practices, and pollution. His remarks highlighted that these issues pose serious threats to global fish stocks and local livelihoods, urging participants to work together for a sustainable future.

Fiji’s Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, led Fiji’s delegation and discussed the nation’s approach to fostering a robust fisheries sector grounded in scientific data. During the summit, Bainivalu participated in various discussions and established bilateral ties with representatives from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) and the European Union, culminating in the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Papua New Guinea for hosting the Pacific Tuna Forum in October 2025.

The summit culminated in a revitalized commitment from Pacific leaders to enhance both regional and global initiatives toward sustainable fisheries. Despite the challenges faced, there is a shared optimism for a future where stakeholders from Pacific nations can thrive through sustainable practices. The ongoing collaboration among nations underscores the hope for proactive strategies to ensure that marine resources are managed effectively, thereby safeguarding both ecological integrity and the economic stability of local communities reliant on these vital resources.

This summit marks a hopeful step forward for the Pacific, fostering a commitment to sustainable fisheries management that not only protects marine ecosystems but also supports the livelihoods of those who depend on them.
