A high-level Forum Troika Plus Mission to New Caledonia is set to commence from tomorrow, October 27, through Tuesday, October 29. This mission follows a directive from the Forum Leaders during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum meeting held in Tonga in August.

The mission will adhere strictly to observational guidelines as requested by the New Caledonian Government and will operate under the Terms of Reference agreed upon by the French State and the New Caledonian Government, with endorsement from the Forum Leaders.

Leading the mission will be Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, the Tongan Prime Minister and PIFS Chairperson, joined by Mark Brown, Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, and Sitiveni Rabuka, Prime Minister of Fiji. Additionally, they will be accompanied by Peter-Shanel Agovaka, the Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade.

The Tongan Prime Minister expressed that the mission conveys ongoing support for the people of New Caledonia, especially following the unrest earlier this year. He noted, “I am pleased that we are finally undertaking this critical mission, particularly following leaders’ discussions last month. This mission highlights the value of the region in coming together to help each other in times of need.”

The Forum Leaders will receive assistance from Secretary General Baron Waqa and senior officials, who will provide guidance in collaboration with the French State and the New Caledonian government. The delegation plans to tour Noumea and engage with various stakeholders affected by recent disturbances, including political parties, youth groups, and impacted communities, as well as discussions involving the private, health, and education sectors.

This mission holds significant importance as it navigates the intricate political landscape of New Caledonia and aims to address ongoing social and economic challenges. By gaining insights into local perspectives, the Forum seeks to facilitate continued dialogue about the future of New Caledonia while honoring its current status.
