A high-level Forum Troika Plus Mission is set to commence in New Caledonia from October 27th to 29th, following the directive from Forum Leaders during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Tonga in August. The mission will be strictly observational, adhering to the request of the New Caledonian government and acting under the agreed Terms of Reference endorsed by both the French State and Forum Leaders.
The mission will be led by Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, the Chairperson of PIFS and Tongan Prime Minister, alongside other leaders including Mark Brown, the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, and Sitiveni Rabuka. They will also be accompanied by Peter-Shanel Agovaka, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade of the Solomon Islands.
Prime Minister Sovaleni expressed his ongoing concern for the people of New Caledonia following the unrest earlier this year, emphasizing the importance of providing support during this critical mission. He noted the collaborative spirit of the region in assisting one another in times of need.
The mission will be aided by Secretary General Baron Waqa and senior officials, who will guide the leaders alongside the jurisdiction of the French State and the New Caledonian government. The mission will include a tour of Noumea, engaging with various stakeholders affected by recent unrest. This will include discussions with political parties, youth, and impacted communities, as well as dialogues involving the private sector, health, and education.
The visit is crucial as it addresses the intricate political dynamics and seeks to tackle the social and economic challenges facing New Caledonia. By gaining insight into local perspectives, the Forum aims to foster a better dialogue regarding the future of New Caledonia while respecting its current status.
