Leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum Troika are set to visit New Caledonia this Sunday for a high-level observational mission. This initiative aligns with the request made by the Government of New Caledonia and follows the Terms of Reference endorsed by the French State, the local government, and Forum Leaders.
The mission will be led by Tonga’s Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, accompanied by Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown and Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Additionally, Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Peter-Shanel Agovaka will join the delegation.
Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku expressed the importance of the mission, highlighting the ongoing concerns for the people of New Caledonia following the unrest experienced earlier this year. He stated, “Our thoughts have always been with the people of New Caledonia since the unrest earlier this year, and we continue to offer our support. I am pleased that we are finally undertaking this critical mission, particularly following Leaders’ discussion last month. This mission highlights the value of the region in coming together to help each other in times of need.”
Supporting the Forum Leaders will be Secretary General Baron Waqa and senior officials, guided by representatives from the French State and New Caledonia’s government. The team plans to tour Noumea and engage with various stakeholders affected by the unrest that began in May, including New Caledonian political parties, youth groups, and communities, while also holding dialogues with the private, health, and education sectors.
The Pacific Islands Forum indicated that this mission is timely, as New Caledonia faces intricate political dynamics along with persistent social and economic challenges. By understanding local perspectives, the Forum aims to enhance support for discussions regarding New Caledonia’s future while acknowledging its current status.
