A high-level Forum Troika Plus Mission is set to commence in New Caledonia from October 27 to October 29, following the directive from Forum Leaders at the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum meeting held in Tonga in August. The mission will be strictly observational, in accordance with the request of the New Caledonian government, and will adhere to the agreed Terms of Reference endorsed by the French State and Forum Leaders.

The mission will be led by Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, the Chairperson of the Pacific Islands Forum and Prime Minister of Tonga, alongside leaders including Mark Brown, Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, and Sitiveni Rabuka, Prime Minister of Fiji. They will also be joined by Peter-Shanel Agovaka, the Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade.

Prime Minister Sovaleni expressed the region’s ongoing support for the people of New Caledonia, particularly in light of the unrest that occurred earlier this year. He noted, “I am pleased that we are finally undertaking this critical mission, particularly following leaders’ discussions last month. This mission highlights the value of the region coming together to assist one another in times of need.”

The Forum Leaders will be accompanied by Secretary General Baron Waqa and senior officials, who will provide guidance under the oversight of the French State and the New Caledonia government. The delegation plans to tour Noumea and engage with various stakeholders affected by the recent unrest, including political parties, youth, and impacted communities, as well as discussions with sectors such as private enterprise, health, and education.

This mission is essential for navigating the complex political landscape and addressing ongoing social and economic challenges in New Caledonia. By gaining insights from local perspectives, the Forum aims to bolster ongoing dialogues regarding the future of New Caledonia, while respecting its current status.
