A high-level Forum Troika Plus Mission to New Caledonia is set to take place from October 27 to 29, following the directive of Forum Leaders during the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum meeting held in Tonga in August.
The mission will be strictly observational, adhering to the request from the Government of New Caledonia, and will follow the agreed Terms of Reference that involve the French State and the New Caledonia government, as endorsed by the Forum Leaders.
The mission will be led by Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, the Tongan Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Pacific Islands Forum, who will be accompanied by Mark Brown, Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Additionally, Peter-Shanel Agovaka, the Solomon Islands Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, will also participate.
Prime Minister Sovaleni expressed his continued support for the people of New Caledonia following the unrest earlier this year. He emphasized the importance of the mission, stating, “I am pleased that we are finally undertaking this critical mission, especially after our discussions last month. This mission showcases the collective strength of the region in supporting one another during difficult times.”
The Forum Leaders will be assisted by Secretary General Baron Waqa and senior officials, who will work under the guidance of both the French State and the New Caledonia government. Their itinerary includes touring Noumea and engaging with various stakeholders affected by the recent turmoil, such as political parties, youth, and community members, along with discussions focusing on the private, health, and education sectors.
This mission aims to navigate the complex political landscape and address the ongoing social and economic challenges in New Caledonia. By understanding local views, the Forum hopes to enhance support for the ongoing dialogue regarding New Caledonia’s future while respecting its current political status.
