Pacific Leaders Draw Together Amid Rising Global Challenges

Mark Brown, chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), called on Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region, who convened in Suva on Friday, to refrain from depending on the goodwill of others. In his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the increasing geostrategic interests faced by the region.

He emphasized the ongoing battle against a climate crisis that worsens annually and the need to address new threats like cyber-attacks and transnational crime. Mr. Brown reiterated the importance of political solidarity, stating that when one member reaches out, the entire forum must respond collectively.

Expressing his satisfaction with the ministers taking time to focus on strengthening their shared priorities amidst these challenges, he asserted that relying on past successes was no longer viable. To realize their collective vision for 2050, he urged a more strategic and assertive approach to engagement with partners.

Mr. Brown encouraged open, constructive, and honest discussions among the ministers during the meeting, emphasizing the need to maximize the opportunity at hand. As he nears the end of his chairmanship, he expressed gratitude to the ministers for their support and collaboration throughout his tenure.

He acknowledged the honor of leading the Forum on behalf of his government and people and took a moment to appreciate the support he has received over the past 18 months during this period of chairing.
