The special envoy of France’s President for the UN Ocean Conference, Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, has emphasized the necessity for larger nations to provide financial support to smaller Pacific Island countries in order to combat the impacts of climate change. He expressed his views during a media briefing, highlighting that this topic would be addressed at the upcoming UN Oceans Conference in Nice, France, scheduled for June next year.
“I fully endorse this perspective,” Mr. Poivre d’Arvor stated. He acknowledged the challenges developed countries face in recognizing their responsibility for climate change-related damages, but insisted on the need to establish a fund to address these impacts. “We must stand beside you,” he added.
During the briefing, Mr. Poivre d’Arvor praised Fiji for its consistent participation in crucial ocean-related discussions. He noted the presence of Pacific leaders who not only advocate for their regions but also represent the concerns of everyday citizens. He expressed admiration for the political commitment shown toward ocean issues, stating, “That’s why we want Nice to replicate the format of the Paris discussions.”
He assured that the conference would provide a platform for Pacific Island leaders, aiming to address not only ocean matters but also broader challenges they face. “The financial issue is significant; without funding, adaptation is impossible,” he emphasized.
