The Pacific Islands Media Freedom Index 2023 was officially launched by the Pacific Freedom Forum during the Seventh PINA Media Summit held in Niue.
The report highlights the diverse challenges encountered by 73 journalists across the Pacific in relation to media freedom. PFF Chairperson and PINA Vice President Robert Luke Iroga emphasized that this report represents a pilot project for the Forum, paving the way for additional surveys conducted by journalists for their peers.
“The establishment of a Pacific Islands Media Freedom Index marks a significant milestone for journalists in the Pacific islands,” he stated. “As the first initiative of its kind conducted for and by Pacific Island newsrooms, this report highlights the critical role of a regional group in voicing the perspectives of Pacific Islanders concerning the current media freedom situation in our islands.”
