Mark Brown, the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), called on Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region during their meeting in Suva on Friday to move away from relying on the goodwill of outside parties. In his opening remarks as chair of the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, he highlighted the region’s growing geopolitical interests and ongoing challenges, including worsening climate issues.
“We are continually facing a climate crisis that becomes more severe each year,” remarked Brown. He also pointed out the need to address new and emerging threats such as cyber-attacks and transnational crime, emphasizing the importance of regional political unity. “When one member seeks assistance, we must be ready to respond as a family within the forum.”
Brown stressed the necessity of collective solidarity, indicating that the time has come to be more strategic and proactive in their engagements to achieve their shared vision for 2050. By doing so, they can ensure that external partners align with their priorities and aspirations.
He encouraged all participants to engage openly and constructively in discussions, making the most of their opportunity together. As Brown’s term as chair comes to a close, he expressed gratitude to the ministers for their cooperation and support throughout his leadership of the Pacific Islands Forum. He acknowledged the honor and privilege of serving in this role and recognized the support he received over the past 18 months from the member countries.
