Pacific Islands Forum: Time for Strategic Solidarity

Pacific Islands Forum chair Mark Brown has urged Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region, gathered in Suva on Friday, to avoid relying on the goodwill of external entities. In his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the increasing geostrategic interest the region is facing.

He emphasized, “We continue to battle a climate crisis that intensifies every year,” while also addressing new challenges like cyber-attacks and transnational crime. He called for strengthened political solidarity among the members, stressing the need for a unified response when one member calls for assistance.

Mr. Brown expressed satisfaction with the ministers’ commitment to discussing ways to enhance their collaborative progress and shared priorities. He noted that the region cannot afford to be complacent and must adopt a more strategic and assertive approach to engage collectively if they wish to achieve their shared vision for 2050.

He encouraged open and constructive discussions, stating, “This is our space; let’s make the most of it.” As he nears the conclusion of his chairmanship, he expressed gratitude to the ministers for their collaboration during his tenure, stating it has been a privilege for him and the Cook Islands to serve in this capacity. He acknowledged the support he received over the past 18 months.
