Pacific Islands Forum Emphasizes Self-Reliance Amid Growing Challenges

Mark Brown, chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), addressed regional Foreign Affairs Ministers during a meeting in Suva on Friday, urging them to avoid relying on the goodwill of external forces. In his opening remarks for the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Brown highlighted the growing geostrategic interests impacting the region.

He pointed out the ongoing battle against an intensifying climate crisis and the rising threats from cyber-attacks and transnational crime. Brown emphasized the need for the region to bolster its political solidarity, enabling a unified response when any member calls for assistance.

He expressed satisfaction that the ministers were taking the opportunity to deliberate on strategies to enhance shared goals and priorities. “We can no longer rest on our laurels and depend on the goodwill of others,” he stated. “To achieve our collective 2050 vision, we must engage more strategically and assertively.”

Brown encouraged open, constructive, and honest discussions among the ministers, reminding them to make the most of their collaborative space. As he nears the end of his term as chair, he thanked the ministers for their support and collaboration during his leadership. He acknowledged the honor of serving in this role and expressed gratitude for their cooperation over the last 18 months.
