Pacific Islands Forum Calls for Regional Unity Amid Growing Challenges

Mark Brown, the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), has called on Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region to refrain from relying solely on the goodwill of others during their meeting in Suva on Friday. In his opening address at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, he emphasized that the region is facing growing geostrategic interests.

“We continue to battle a climate crisis that intensifies every year,” Mr. Brown noted. He highlighted the need to address emerging challenges such as cyber-attacks and transnational crime, advocating for enhanced political solidarity within the region. “When one member calls on us, we, as a forum family, are able to respond,” he said, stressing the significance of collective unity.

Mr. Brown expressed satisfaction with the ministers’ commitment to strengthening shared priorities amid ongoing pressures. He stated that, to achieve their collective vision for 2050, they must adopt a more strategic and assertive approach in their engagements with partners, ensuring that their aspirations are adequately supported.

He encouraged openness and constructive dialogue among the ministers, as the forum presents a vital platform for collaboration. As he nears the conclusion of his chairmanship, Mr. Brown extended his gratitude to the ministers for their cooperation and honesty throughout his tenure.

He acknowledged the support received from all member nations over the past 18 months, expressing that it has been both an honor and a privilege for him and his government to serve in this capacity.
