“Pacific Islands Forum: A Call for Stronger Regional Solidarity”

Mark Brown, the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), called on Foreign Affairs Ministers from the region during their meeting in Suva on Friday to move away from relying on the goodwill of external parties.

In his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the increasing geostrategic interests impacting the region. He pointed out the ongoing climate crisis that worsens annually and the emergence of new challenges such as cyber-attacks and transnational crime.

Brown emphasized the need for the region to bolster its political solidarity, ensuring a collective response when any member country requires assistance. He stressed the critical nature of working together amidst these challenges and expressed satisfaction that the ministers were taking the time to strategize on enhancing shared progress and priorities.

He cautioned against complacency, stating that achieving the region’s shared 2050 vision requires a more strategic and proactive approach in engaging with partners to support local priorities and aspirations.

Mr. Brown encouraged open and constructive discussions among the ministers, stating, “This is our space; let’s make the most of it.” As he approached the conclusion of his chairmanship, he expressed gratitude to the ministers for their collaboration and support over the past 18 months, remarking that it has been an honor and privilege for him and his government to hold this role within the Forum.
