Mark Brown, the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), has called on regional Foreign Affairs Ministers, who convened in Suva on Friday, to avoid relying on the goodwill of external parties. In his opening remarks at the 2024 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting, Mr. Brown highlighted the increasing geostrategic interests the region faces.
“We are still grappling with a climate crisis that becomes more severe each year,” Mr. Brown stated. He emphasized the need to address new and emerging threats, including cyberattacks and transnational crime. He reiterated the importance of political solidarity among members so that they can effectively respond to each other’s calls for assistance.
Mr. Brown expressed satisfaction that the ministers were taking the opportunity to explore how to enhance their shared objectives and priorities amidst these pressing challenges. “We can no longer depend on others’ goodwill. To achieve our common vision for 2050, we must engage more strategically and assertively,” he stressed.
He urged the ministers to be open and constructive in their discussions to make the most of the gathering. As he nears the conclusion of his term as chair, Mr. Brown expressed gratitude for the collaboration and support he has received from fellow members throughout his chairmanship.
“It has been a privilege for my government, my people, and myself to have held this role in the Pacific Islands Forum, and I appreciate your support over the past 18 months,” he added, acknowledging the contributions of all member states.
