Pacific Island Countries Struggle to Attract Japanese Tourists: Challenges and Potential Solutions

Pacific Island Countries (PICS), inclusive of Fiji, have been encouraged to boost their appeal to Japanese visitors. Akiko Takahashi, director of the Pacific Island Centre, identified the difficulties faced in enticing Japanese tourists to holiday in these small island nations. She noted that Japanese tourists usually prefer destinations that have more frequent and less lengthy flights. Presently, Fiji only offers two direct flights weekly from Nadi to Narita, which is not appealing, especially to the main demographic of older tourists. Despite various promotional efforts in Japan to showcase Fiji and other Pacific island countries as desirable vacation spots, the outcomes have not met expectations. She underscores the need for additional strategies to attract Japanese visitors.
