Pacific Immunization Programs: Milestones and Future Challenges

Immunization programs across the Pacific region have made remarkable progress, according to Dr. Mark Jacobs, the World Health Organization’s representative for the South Pacific. Speaking at the 13th Pacific Immunization Managers Meeting in Sigatoka on Monday, Dr. Jacobs highlighted that since 2000, the Western Pacific region has been certified polio-free, which is a significant milestone for public health in Pacific Island nations.

He pointed out that these countries have successfully eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus and have substantially reduced Hepatitis B infections among children. Furthermore, all Pacific nations have implemented two doses of measles and rubella vaccines in their routine immunization schedules, aiming for elimination of these diseases by 2025.

Dr. Jacobs praised the rapid introduction of new and underutilized vaccines, facilitated by international cooperation. The inclusion of all WHO-recommended vaccines in national programs is anticipated to bring significant health benefits in the future and aid in the pursuit of universal health coverage and sustainable development goals.

While there is much to celebrate, he cautioned that challenges still exist. In 2023, global childhood immunization coverage stagnated, resulting in 2.7 million more children being under-vaccinated compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Despite the current challenges, the accomplishments of the Pacific Island countries provide a strong foundation for future health initiatives. The commitment to immunization can lead to healthier futures for children in the region, showing that with continued effort and collaboration, further advances in public health are possible.

This article illustrates a hopeful outlook on public health in the Pacific, demonstrating how collaborative efforts can lead to significant achievements even in the face of ongoing challenges.
