Pacific Conference Aims to Tackle Labour Challenges and Climate Justice

The ongoing 2024 Public Service International (PSI) Oceania Sub-Regional Advisory Committee Conference in Nadi aims to adopt a collaborative approach to tackle labor challenges and capitalize on growth opportunities within the Pacific region.

During the official opening ceremony this morning, Parmesh Chand, the Permanent Secretary for Civil Service and Public Enterprise, emphasized that the conference convenes 50 participants from six Pacific Island countries to engage in dialogue and share ideas focused on improving workplace conditions in their nations.

Chand noted that the conference will specifically address issues such as climate justice, labor migration, insourcing, combating privatization, the rights of indigenous workers, adherence to International Labour standards, and strengthening capacity and organization.

He further mentioned that the Fijian Government has put several measures in place to mitigate labor migration and other labor-related challenges within the Civil Service. These measures include the removal of contractual conditions, the introduction of tenure service, and a salary adjustment program that guarantees pay increases ranging from 7 to 20 percent. Additionally, the government has launched an Internship and Graduate Trainee program aimed at bridging skills gaps among the local workforce.

Chand revealed that the Ministry of Civil Service is currently undertaking a review of the General Orders to enhance the employment terms and conditions for civil servants.

He expressed confidence in a promising future for work in Fiji, given the establishment of tripartite mechanisms and the strategic plans set to be implemented in the upcoming National Development Plan.

Chand reassured attendees that Fiji is well-positioned to comply with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards and to implement best practices. Moreover, youth representatives from countries participating in the Oceania Sub-Regional Advisory Committee Conference (OSRAC) are also taking part in this year’s event.
