On September 6, the Pacific Community unveiled two new literacy resources in honor of International Literacy Day.
The first resource is a regional poetry booklet aimed at enhancing literacy through poetry, making it suitable for educators and parents at various educational levels. The booklet is titled “Voices of the Pacific Youth: A Literacy Learning Tool.”
Ruci Qele, the Educational Assessment Specialist for Literacy at the Pacific Community, explained that while the booklet was developed based on findings from the Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment of 2021, which focused on Year 4 and Year 6 students, it is versatile enough for use by teachers and parents to help establish literacy foundations in Pacific students of all academic levels.
Additionally, SPC introduced the Pacific’s Education Research Bank, a digital platform available on the Pacific Data Hub, aimed at providing access to regional education research and addressing information management issues.
The event also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the South Pacific Form Seven Certificate, a significant qualification for Year 13 students.
This year’s theme for International Literacy Day was “Enhancing literacy through multilingualism: Promoting peace across the Blue Pacific Continent.”
SPC intends to distribute these new literacy resources to Education Ministries across its 15 member countries.
