Over 3000 Students Referred: New Measures in Schools None

More than 3000 students were referred from schools to the National Substance Abuse Advisory Council last year, according to Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro.

This situation has led the ministry to consider using drug testing kits in schools, with assistance from other ministries and departments.

Minister Radrodro mentioned that there is an existing in-house policy for dealing with students found with drugs, and those who violate this policy are referred to the substance abuse center.

“In the last calendar year, over 3000 students were taken to the substance abuse center,” stated Radrodro.

“There is a policy in place for handling students found with drugs, which is already being followed in schools. These students are referred to the current operating center.”

“We hope that the number of students abusing drugs will decrease now that this policy is in effect.”

“We are also considering the use of drug testing kits in schools in collaboration with other ministries and departments as a possible future measure. Our aim is to reduce drug problems in schools.”

As the second term school holiday approaches, Mr. Radrodro is urging students, teachers, stakeholders, and parents to take responsibility and ensure students are kept away from drugs.

“I would like to advise school students to stay away from drugs.”

“There is a long and bright future ahead if you continue to avoid drug use.”

“Schools, teachers, stakeholders, and parents all have a critical role to play in keeping drugs out of our school systems.”
