Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed concern over the recent announcement by the Mercy Commission regarding the pardon of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup. He stated that he has received numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who are upset and disheartened by this decision.
In his statement, Lal noted that the announcement has resurfaced deep emotional wounds for many who have experienced significant losses, whether it was family members, jobs, businesses, or the need to flee the country during that tumultuous period.
He acknowledged that the painful memories from the events of 2000 remain vivid for many individuals, and he expressed solidarity with those affected, recognizing the lasting impact on their lives and the nation.
“As your representative, I must be honest—while I hear and share your concerns, this is the reality we are living in and I do not have the authority to reverse or challenge the decision made. Please know that I deeply empathize with your pain, and while I cannot change what has happened, I will continue to represent your voices to the best of my ability in our ongoing fight for the coalition to be transparent with and accountable to every Fijian,” Lal said.
