Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed that he has been inundated with heartfelt messages from Fijians who are deeply saddened and disappointed by the recent decision of the Mercy Commission to pardon George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.
In his statement, Lal noted that this decision has reopened old wounds for those affected by the coup, whether through personal loss, disruption of livelihoods, business impacts, or forced exile during that tumultuous period. He highlighted that the scars from the events of 2000 remain fresh for many individuals, and acknowledged the significant repercussions these events have had on their lives and the nation.
“As your representative, I must be frank—while I understand and share your concerns, this is the reality we are facing, and I lack the authority to overturn or contest the decision made. Please know that I empathize with your suffering, and although I cannot alter the past, I will endeavor to represent your voices effectively as we continue to hold the coalition accountable and demand transparency for all Fijians,” Lal stated.
