Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed that he has been receiving numerous heartfelt messages from Fijians who are distressed and disheartened by the recent announcement from the Mercy Commission regarding the pardon of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 Coup.
In his statement, Lal emphasized that this decision has reopened painful memories for those who experienced loss—be it in family, livelihood, business, or those who had to flee the country for safety during those turbulent times.
He noted that the wounds from the events of 2000 remain fresh for many individuals, and he stands in solidarity with them in acknowledging the significant impact this incident has had on their lives and on the nation overall.
“As your representative, I want to be candid—while I understand and share your concerns, this is the reality we must confront, and I do not possess the power to overturn or contest the conclusions reached. Please know that I genuinely empathize with your hurt, and although I cannot alter the past, I will strive to voice your concerns diligently in our ongoing pursuit for transparency and accountability from the coalition for every Fijian,” Lal stated.
