Orlando City has officially released midfielder Nico Lodeiro after mutually agreeing to terminate the 35-year-old’s contract on Tuesday. Lodeiro’s tenure at Orlando City spanned just one season, during which he contributed one goal and 11 assists across 34 MLS appearances, including 16 starts.
Orlando City general manager Luiz Muzzi praised Lodeiro’s impact on the team, stating, “This was certainly a difficult decision as Nico has been a great addition to the team since joining us at the beginning of last season. Ultimately, we feel this is the best move for both the team and Nico at this time.” He described Lodeiro as a “fantastic human being” who integrated seamlessly into the club.
Before joining Orlando City, Lodeiro was known for his successful eight-season run with the Seattle Sounders (2016-2023). He played a crucial role in the team’s achievements, including helping them secure the MLS Cup in both 2016 and 2019, as well as the CONCACAF Champions League title in 2022. In his time with the Sounders, he amassed an impressive record of 41 goals and 80 assists in 191 regular-season matches, making him one of the standout attacking midfielders in the league.
The decision to part ways reflects Orlando City’s strategy moving forward, as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season. For Lodeiro, this opens doors for new opportunities, and his significant experience and skill set are sure to attract interest elsewhere.
This situation highlights the dynamic nature of professional sports, where teams and players must constantly adapt. Lodeiro leaves behind a legacy of contributions both on and off the field, and as he continues his career, he will surely bring his talents to new heights in the next chapter of his professional journey.
