Oral Health Crisis: Fiji’s New Challenge with NCDs

Dr. Parikshath Naidu, the president of the Fiji Dental Association, has announced that oral disease is now classified as a non-communicable disease (NCD). During the Fiji Dental Annual Conference held in Nadi, Dr. Naidu expressed concerns about the increasing prevalence of NCDs both globally and within Fiji.

He noted, “The Ministry of Health has highlighted that NCDs are on the rise in Fiji.” The association aims to find ways to mitigate NCDs and promote healthier lifestyles for the Fijian population.

The conference featured several prominent speakers from both overseas and local backgrounds. Dr. Naidu mentioned, “We aim to have a diverse range of speakers due to our global recognition and often have more speakers than we can accommodate.”

The event welcomed Professor Young Guk Park from Seoul, Korea, as the guest speaker, representing the World Dental Federation. Additionally, speakers from Australia participated, with some joining virtually from abroad.

The Fiji Dental Association also held its annual general meeting on Saturday.
