The Opposition is essential in holding the Government accountable and collaborating to improve the nation’s decisions.
During an appearance on The Lens@177, independent MP Jone Usamate highlighted instances of cooperation between both parties. Notable examples included the Government’s decision to withdraw the proposed Heritage Bill 2023 in response to Opposition objections, and Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu’s request for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to participate in COP28 last year.
Usamate stated, “Some of the work we do in committees, the recommendations we make, make it to Parliament.” He emphasized that when these recommendations are adopted, they influence the decision-making process. Currently, discussions are taking place regarding the sugar industry, with a request for a committee to examine the entire sector.
He noted that even without a majority, well-reasoned arguments supported by factual evidence can ensure their perspectives are heard. Usamate pointed out that many members of their group have previously served as ministers and understand the workings of the government and its challenges.
At present, the Standing Committee on Justice, Law, and Human Rights is reviewing four key pieces of legislation: disaster risk management, anti-doping in sports, child justice, and child protection initiatives.
Usamate remarked, “In Parliament, on the government side, everyone is also part of the executive, as they are in Cabinet or hold assistant minister roles.” He stressed the importance of focusing on enhancing the leadership of the country, stating that if the government is acting incorrectly, it is necessary to voice opposition, while also supporting correct actions that benefit the nation.
