Opposition’s Influence: More than Just Opposition in Parliament

The Opposition is playing a crucial role in both holding the Government accountable and collaborating to improve the country’s decision-making processes.

During an appearance on The Lens@177, independent Member of Parliament Jone Usamate highlighted instances of cross-party collaboration. Notably, the Government withdrew the proposed Heritage Bill 2023 following objections from the Opposition. Additionally, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu urged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to attend COP28 last year.

Mr. Usamate explained, “Some of the work that we do in committees, the recommendations that we make in committees, they make it to Parliament.” He noted that once these recommendations are adopted in Parliament, they can significantly influence outcomes. For example, discussions are ongoing regarding the sugar industry, with a committee being established to review the entire sector.

He emphasized the importance of these influences through committee work, debates, and informal discussions among members of all parties. Mr. Usamate acknowledged that despite not having a majority, presenting solid, fact-based arguments ensured their perspectives were heard.

He pointed out that many in their group have previously served as ministers, providing them with insight into governmental operations and challenges. Currently, the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights is examining four pieces of legislation related to disaster risk management, anti-doping in sports, child justice, and child protection.

Mr. Usamate stated, “In Parliament, on the government side, everybody is also part of the executive because they are in Cabinet, they are assistant ministers.” He stressed that whether a member is in government or opposition, the overarching goal should be to enhance the leadership of the country.

He added, “If there are things that the government is doing that you believe is not right, then you speak against it. If there are things that they are doing that you know are right, you support it because it’s all in the best interest of the country.”
