Opposition Splits into Two Blocs: What’s Next for Fiji’s Politics?

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, announced that all 26 members of the Opposition will operate under two distinct working groups, referred to as blocs. During a speech in Parliament, he revealed that one group would be called the 16-bloc, led by Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, with Jone Usamate serving as Whip and Ketan Lal as the deputy Whip.

The second group, the 9-bloc, will be headed by Ioane Naivalurua, with Viliame Naupoto as Whip and Alipate Tuicolo as deputy Whip. Ratu Naiqama emphasized that all 26 members remain part of the Opposition, functioning within these two blocs. He noted that one member is currently awaiting the outcome of an appeal filed with the Fijian Electoral Commission, which is pending before final decisions are made.

In accordance with Standing Orders, Ratu Naiqama indicated that a review of the membership for the six standing committees and four select committees would take place to ensure equitable representation for both blocs. He stated that further announcements regarding these changes would come later in the week, urging MPs to maintain constructive dialogue focused on the public’s best interests.
