Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has disclosed that the Coalition Government is making significant efforts to engage with members of the Group of 16 (G16) during a recent media conference. He revealed that some members of the G16 are contemplating forming a new political party as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 general elections, despite ongoing efforts from the government to entice their support.

Seruiratu emphasized that while approaches from the Coalition are continuous, the G16 members remain committed to their roles as part of the opposition. Interestingly, neither he nor fellow G16 MP Jone Usamate has been personally approached by the government. Usamate reiterated the necessity of a strong opposition for effective governance in Fiji.

The G16, comprising independent members, allows each individual MP to make their own political decisions, which Seruiratu assured would be respected within the group. The announcement regarding the potential formation of a new party aims to provide clarity to their supporters, as Seruiratu stated, “We cannot leave our supporters in suspension for too long.”

He further articulated that the envisioned party would reflect lessons learned from their previous association with the now-defunct FijiFirst party, incorporating principles such as humility, inclusivity, and accountability into its foundation. Seruiratu insisted on their commitment to learning from past mistakes to foster better governance moving forward.

This political development comes amidst a broader context of changing dynamics within Fiji’s political environment, particularly following the dissolution of FijiFirst and the recalibration of alliances. The formation of a new party by members of the G16 could revive political engagement and create a robust democratic atmosphere as Fiji gears up for the elections.

In summary, while the G16’s potential new party symbolizes a significant shift in opposition dynamics, it also presents a hopeful opportunity for revitalized political discourse and citizen engagement. As they strive to redefine their roles within Fiji’s political landscape, there is a strong prospect for a more accountable and representative governance structure that resonates with the aspirations of the Fijian populace.
