Opposition MP Ketan Lal is urging the government to take immediate action against what he describes as the reckless speeding of truck and bus drivers, as well as other heavy vehicles. His call comes in light of a recent accident involving a Goundar Shipping Ltd bus in Lautoka, which Lal describes as a concerning example of irresponsible driving behavior.
Lal emphasizes that the ongoing issue of speeding on the roads—a problem particularly prevalent among trucks, buses, and public transport vehicles—cannot be overlooked any longer. He believes that these vehicles frequently exceed national speed limits, which poses a significant threat to the safety of all road users. He argues that it is time for more than just awareness campaigns; decisive measures must be implemented immediately.
To combat this issue, Lal is advocating for the mandatory installation of speed limiters or Speed Lock Systems on all public service vehicles (PSVs) and trucks on the roads. He proposes that these speed limiters should restrict the maximum speed to 80 km/h, consistent with the national speed limit. While acknowledging that some transport vehicles currently have a speed limit of 60 km/h, he insists that the implementation of an 80 km/h limit would provide much-needed flexibility, while also significantly reducing the potential for speed-related accidents.
Lal asserts that many of the recent accidents were preventable and urges the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the government, and relevant stakeholders to prioritize road safety and enforce essential measures to protect the lives of citizens. He believes that action is overdue and emphasizes that we must not wait for another tragedy to prompt change.
In a hopeful outlook, if Lal’s proposals are taken seriously, they could lead to a marked improvement in road safety standards, ultimately saving lives and making the roads safer for everyone. Ensuring stricter regulations for heavy vehicles not only could help prevent future accidents but also foster a culture of safety and responsibility among drivers.
In summary, MP Ketan Lal is calling for immediate government action against reckless driving among heavy vehicle operators, proposing uniform speed limits and speed limiters as essential measures to enhance road safety and prevent accidents.
