Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has voiced his support for the Prime Minister’s initiative to create a board of inquiry into the ongoing issues surrounding the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Mr. Seruiratu believes that establishing this inquiry is essential for maintaining the Government’s integrity and addressing the concerns that have been raised regarding the matter’s management.

Speaking to the media, he stated that forming a board of inquiry is the appropriate action. “That’s the right thing to do,” Mr. Seruiratu noted, referencing his previous insistence on this matter during the Lynda Tabuya case, in which he wrote a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office, emphasizing the Prime Minister’s role as the head of Government. He acknowledged that while independent bodies are responsible for appointments, the Prime Minister ultimately bears the responsibility for administrative issues, including those related to FICAC and Barbara Malimali.

He further highlighted that establishing a board of inquiry would enhance both the integrity of the Prime Minister’s Office and the individuals implicated in the case.

Additionally, Mr. Seruiratu expressed the importance of including women in leadership roles as part of efforts to eliminate discrimination, mentioning that there are processes and procedures in place to facilitate this.

When asked if the inquiry could potentially compromise the integrity of the Judicial Services Commission, Mr. Seruiratu recognized the challenges faced by such organizations. He stressed that compliance with established systems and principles of good governance is vital for sustaining trust in these entities.

“If this is a recurring issue, it raises questions about those in charge. I hope the Prime Minister will keep his promise and initiate an inquiry into these matters,” he concluded.
