Opposition Leader Questions Controversial Appointment in Fiji’s Anti-Corruption Agency

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has urged the Judicial Services Commission to withdraw the appointment of lawyer Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed concerns that her appointment could reflect poorly on the Government if it proceeds. He clarified that he holds no personal objections to Malimali but highlighted that there is an ongoing investigation against her by the same entity she is set to lead.

Seruiratu expressed his shock, stating that this kind of action has been a consistent pattern from the Government since its inception. He emphasized that the timing of the appointment is inappropriate given the ongoing investigation.

“It requires common sense and wisdom, especially from the Judicial Services Commission, as it tarnishes the image of the Government and raises implications for the appointee herself,” he remarked.

He added that effective governance stems from strong political leadership and the adherence to the rule of law and established processes.

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption had scheduled a press conference for 11:30 am, but it has since been postponed to a later date.
