The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Government to launch an Independent Inquiry following accusations made by former Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai, regarding ministerial interference in FICAC’s operations.
Seruiratu expressed that the allegations are serious and require immediate attention. He concurred with the Prime Minister on the necessity of an investigation.
“To promote fairness, transparency, and effective governance, I recommend that this Commission of Inquiry be established after this week’s parliamentary session. The Commission should include Judicial Officers, Members of Parliament, and distinguished legal experts from the private sector, ensuring they are not subject to any ongoing investigations and are impartial without any conflicts of interest related to the issues at hand,” Seruiratu stated.
He emphasized that these allegations pose a significant threat to both good governance and democracy.
Furthermore, the Opposition Leader called for the former Deputy Commissioner to come forward to clarify her claims and insisted that those accused should have the opportunity to defend themselves.
“We are at a pivotal moment for our nation, and as elected representatives of the people of Fiji, we must earnestly seek to uncover the truth behind these allegations and work diligently to restore public trust,” Seruiratu concluded.
