Opposition Leader Challenges Controversial Appointment in Fiji’s Anti-Corruption Agency

Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has urged the Judicial Services Commission to withdraw its decision to appoint lawyer Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Addressing the media outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed concerns that Malimali’s appointment could reflect poorly on the Government if confirmed. He noted that there is an ongoing investigation involving her by the very authority she is set to lead, which he finds to be troubling.

Seruiratu stated that while he holds no personal animosity towards Malimali, the timing of her appointment is inappropriate given the circumstances of the ongoing investigation. He emphasized the importance of common sense and wisdom on the part of the Judicial Services Commission, as the situation could damage the Government’s reputation and raise implications for Malimali herself.

He reiterated his belief that effective governance stems from strong political leadership and adherence to the rule of law.

Additionally, FijiLive has reached out to the Judicial Services Commission for their response. Meanwhile, a scheduled press conference by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption has been postponed to a later time or date.
