Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has urged the Judicial Services Commission to revoke the appointment of lawyer Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed concerns that Malimali’s appointment would reflect poorly on the Government if it proceeds. He emphasized that while he holds no personal grudge against Malimali, her appointment comes amidst an ongoing investigation led by the commission she is set to lead.
Seruiratu expressed his shock at the decision, noting that it follows a troubling pattern of actions by the Government since its inception. He criticized the timing of the appointment, given the active investigation, stating, “It requires common sense, and of course wisdom. Particularly on the part of the Judicial Services Commission, because it paints a bad image of the Government and of course it implicates the appointee herself.”
He further asserted that effective governance is rooted in strong political leadership alongside adherence to the rule of law and existing systems.
The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption had scheduled a press conference at 11:30 am, which has since been postponed to a later time or date.
