The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged the Judicial Services Commission to reverse the appointment of lawyer Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed concerns that her appointment would reflect poorly on the government if it proceeds.
While he stated that he holds no personal animosity toward Malimali, Seruiratu pointed out that there is an ongoing investigation against her by the very authority she is set to lead. He expressed his shock, although not surprise, at this development, describing it as part of a continual trend by the government since its inception.
Seruiratu emphasized that the timing of this appointment is inappropriate, given the active investigation. “It requires common sense and wisdom, particularly from the Judicial Services Commission, as it tarnishes the government’s image and puts the appointee in a difficult position,” he remarked.
He further articulated his belief that good governance stems from effective political leadership and adherence to the rule of law, along with established processes and systems. Additionally, FijiLive has reached out to the Judicial Services Commission for their perspective. Meanwhile, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption had scheduled a press conference for 11:30 am, which has now been postponed to a later time or date.
