Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has urged the Judicial Services Commission to withdraw the appointment of lawyer Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed concerns that proceeding with her appointment would reflect poorly on the Government.
While Seruiratu stated he bears no personal animosity towards Malimali, he emphasized that there is an active investigation into her by the very agency she is set to lead. He conveyed his surprise and disappointment, noting that this pattern of behavior has been evident from the Government’s actions since the beginning.
He criticized the timing of the appointment, given the ongoing investigation, and remarked, “It requires common sense, and of course wisdom,” particularly from the Judicial Services Commission, as it adversely affects both the Government’s reputation and Malimali’s own credibility.
Seruiratu reiterated the importance of good governance rooted in strong political leadership and the adherence to the rule of law. Additionally, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption had scheduled a press conference for 11:30 AM, which has now been postponed to a later date or time.
