Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has voiced his support for the Prime Minister’s proposal to create a board of inquiry into the ongoing issues surrounding the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Seruiratu’s backing highlights his view that such an inquiry is essential to maintain the integrity of the Government and to address various concerns regarding the management of the situation. During a media briefing, he remarked that establishing a board of inquiry is the appropriate course of action.

“That’s the right thing to do,” Seruiratu stated. He referenced his previous insistence on the matter during the Lynda Tabuya case, recalling that he had personally written to the Office of the Prime Minister, emphasizing that the Prime Minister, as the head of Government, holds ultimate responsibility for these issues, despite the presence of independent bodies involved in appointments.

He noted that the Prime Minister must take accountability for problems within the administration, particularly those linked to FICAC and Barbara Malimali.

Seruiratu further conveyed that forming a board of inquiry would not only enhance the integrity of the Prime Minister’s Office but would also serve the interests of the individuals involved in the case. He expressed a desire to see women included in leadership roles, acknowledging that this is part of combating discrimination against women, albeit insisting that established processes must be followed.

When asked if an inquiry could potentially compromise the integrity of the Judicial Services Commission, Seruiratu recognized the challenges faced by such institutions. He stressed the importance of sticking to established protocols, processes, and principles of good governance to preserve public trust.

“If this is a recurring issue, it raises questions about those in charge. Therefore, I hope the Prime Minister will fulfill his commitment to initiate an inquiry into these matters,” he concluded.
