Opposition in Two Camps: A New Political Divide Unfolds

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, announced in the House this morning that the Opposition has divided into two factions. The first faction, headed by the Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu, comprises 16 members, with Jone Usamate serving as Whip and Ketan Lal as Deputy Whip.

The second faction, led by Iowane Naivalurua, includes nine members, with Viliame Naupoto as Whip and Alipate Tuicolo as Deputy Whip. Ratu Naiqama clarified that all 26 members remain part of the Opposition but are now functioning within these two distinct groups.

He also stated that due to the formation of these two working groups, his office would review the membership of the standing committees to ensure equitable representation for both factions. Additionally, Alvick Maharaj has yet to determine which group he will join, as he is waiting for a decision regarding his appeal against the de-registration of the FijiFirst Party.
