Opposition Divides: Inside Fiji’s Parliamentary Blocs

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, announced today the existence of two distinct factions within the Opposition in the House.

He indicated that one faction is led by the Leader of the Opposition and is comprised of 16 members, referred to as the “group of 16.” The group’s Whip is Jone Usamate, while Ketan Lal serves as the Deputy Whip.

The second faction, consisting of 9 members, is headed by Ioane Naivalurua. Viliame Naupoto acts as the Whip, and Alipate Tuicolo serves as the Deputy Whip for this bloc.

Ratu Naiqama confirmed that all 26 members are recognized as Opposition members, functioning under these two factions. He reminded the House of his obligation under Standing Orders to protect the rights and privileges of all members.

In accordance with the new division, the Speaker’s office will review the membership of the six standing committees and four select committees, aiming for equitable representation for both factions. Further updates on this matter will be provided later in the week.
