Opposition Calls for Reversal of Controversial Anti-Corruption Appointment

Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, has urged the Judicial Services Commission to reconsider the appointment of lawyer Barbara Malimali as the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Seruiratu expressed concerns regarding the implications of her appointment for the Government.

He noted that while he has no personal issues with Malimali, there is currently an ongoing investigation against her by the same authority she is set to lead. Seruiratu voiced his shock at the situation but mentioned it aligns with a pattern observed since the beginning of the Government’s term.

He emphasized that the timing of her appointment is inappropriate given the active investigation and pointed out that such decisions require wisdom and common sense from the Judicial Services Commission, as they could negatively affect the Government’s reputation and implicate the appointee as well. Seruiratu reiterated that effective governance stems from strong political leadership and adherence to the rule of law.

Additionally, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption had scheduled a press conference for 11:30 am, which has now been postponed to a later time or date. The FijiLive news outlet has also reached out to the Judicial Services Commission for their response.
