OpenAI is experiencing significant leadership changes, with Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew and Research VP Barret Zoph resigning shortly after CTO Mira Murati announced her departure. CEO Sam Altman confirmed these changes in a post on X, explaining that the resignations were made independently but timed together for a smoother transition to new leadership.

Mark Chen, currently VP of Research, has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Research, and will lead alongside Jakub Pachocki, who takes on the role of Chief Scientist. Matt Knight will step into the position of Chief Information Security Officer, while Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil and VP of Engineering Srinivas Narayanan will continue to oversee OpenAI’s applied team, focused on delivering technology to enterprise and consumer clients.

Research scientist Josh Achiam will assume a new position as head of mission alignment, tasked with ensuring the organization’s culture and operations align with its objectives. Altman noted that he would be more involved with the technical and product aspects of the company moving forward.

In his message, Altman reassured all stakeholders that leadership changes are a part of the business, particularly in rapidly growing companies like OpenAI. He acknowledged the abruptness of the situation but emphasized that it is integral for the company as it evolves.

McGrew expressed a desire for a break after eight years with OpenAI, reflecting on the organization’s transformation from a small nonprofit into a leading research and deployment firm. Zoph, who joined in 2022, mentioned it felt like a natural time for him to seek new opportunities, indicating a desire for personal career growth.

The resignations come amid reports of a possible transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit structure at OpenAI, with Altman reportedly set to gain a 7% equity stake following a funding round that values the company at $150 billion. This shift in direction may have contributed to internal disagreements resulting in these high-profile departures.

Recent months have seen other significant exits, including research scientist Andrej Karpathy and co-founder John Schulman. Currently, only three of the original 13 founders remain at OpenAI.

Altman acknowledged the demands of leadership at OpenAI, recognizing it as both a privilege and a challenge to guide a rapidly evolving organization.
