The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has confirmed that only light oil and fuel are leaking from the sunken MV Sullivan in Suva Harbour. CEO Joeli Cawaki announced that their team is actively working to contain the leakage, which is currently under control, as lighter oils tend to disperse quickly on the water’s surface.

Cawaki explained that MSAF is prepared to address any thicker oils that might appear by using cleaning and absorbent materials. He also mentioned that mariners in the area have been alerted regarding this situation.

To assess the environmental impact, water samples from the site have been sent to the Water Authority of Fiji for testing. Containers have been provided for collecting samples from various locations around the affected area, and a follow-up report is expected to provide further insights.

Cawaki reassured the local community, including residents of Navukavu and Lami, that there is no cause for alarm, as the situation is being managed effectively. The Water Police will also conduct security checks in the vicinity to ensure public safety.

This incident highlights not only the efficient response of MSAF but also demonstrates the commitment to environmental protection and community safety.

In summary, MSAF is proactively addressing the oil spill situation from the MV Sullivan, ensuring that both the marine environment and local water sources are being monitored and safeguarded. This diligence is a positive step toward maintaining the health of Fiji’s waters and is an assurance to the local communities that their safety is a priority.
