Despite the ocean being a critical resource for many Pacific island nations, it is not officially included on the agenda of the Conference of Parties (COP). Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment, expressed optimism about the potential to incorporate ocean-related discussions into other negotiation topics at the World Climate Conference.

He noted that while ocean issues have not been treated as a standalone item at COP, there is a consistent effort to weave these discussions into various negotiation tracks. Dr. Michael emphasized the importance of adapting to new forms of climate change impacts, highlighting that this adaptation involves rethinking how marine resources are utilized.

The region aims to emphasize the ocean’s significant role in climate systems and overall environmental sustainability. Dr. Michael stated the goal is to develop well-defined positions for the Pacific region. This would ensure that discussions during COP are meaningful and genuine, and that the role of oceans is properly reflected in the negotiation outcomes.
