South Sea Towage Limited (SSTL) has initiated preparatory activities and entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Pacific Marine Group, aiming to address the issue of derelict ships detracting from the aesthetics of Suva Harbour. SSTL is partially owned by the Unit Trust of Fiji, which holds a 60 percent stake.
Sakiusa Bolaira, General Manager of UTOF, stated that discussions are ongoing regarding project timelines, with a targeted start date of January 2025 for the removal of approximately 80 grounded vessels in Suva Harbour. He emphasized the urgent need for rehabilitation in the harbour, noting that the current situation poses hazards that hinder larger ships from docking.
Bolaira indicated that collaboration is underway with Fiji Ports Corporation and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji to facilitate the removal of these vessels. SSTL Chairperson Himmat Lodhia remarked that the Memorandum of Understanding highlights a shared commitment to eliminate derelict ships and debris from Suva Harbour, with plans to expand these efforts to other areas in Fiji.
Lodhia expressed that this issue has been a long-standing topic among leaders, but with the partnership between SSTL and Pacific Marine Group, they are poised to take action. Additionally, he announced intentions to expand operations into the Solomon Islands in November, building on existing services in Vanuatu and Nauru. He stressed the importance of this MOU signing as a step forward for both companies and for Fiji as an advocate for climate and environmental conservation.
Andrew Morris from Pacific Marine Group noted that the organization is recognized as a leader in marine contracting and commercial diving across the South Pacific. Based in Townsville, PMG provides a range of services including marine construction and demolition, dredging, tug and barge services, commercial diving, and salvage operations, all conducted in compliance with accredited standards and relevant legislation.
Meanwhile, SSTL holds a reviewable contract with Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd, granting it exclusive rights to perform all movements and related services at designated ports including Suva, Lautoka, Malau, and Warik.
