The ocean is a critical resource for many Pacific island nations, but it is not a standalone agenda item at the Conference of Parties (COP). Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for Environment, expressed optimism about the potential for integrating ocean-related discussions into broader negotiation areas at the World Climate Conference.
Dr. Michael noted that while the ocean has never been separately addressed at COP, discussions about it are woven into various negotiation tracks. He stated, “Adapting to new forms of climate change or its impacts requires us to adjust how we utilize our ocean and marine resources. Thus, bringing this cross-cutting issue into negotiation discussions is essential, though it is not initially set as a standalone agenda item.”
He emphasized the importance of highlighting the ocean’s vital role in climate systems and global environmental sustainability. Additionally, Dr. Michael indicated that the Pacific region aims to have well-defined positions to ensure meaningful conversations with negotiation partners. He hopes to see these issues reflected in the texts that emerge from such meetings.
