Oasis of Hope: New Retreat for Women Cancer Survivors Opens in Fiji

The Self Care Retreat (Fiji) Hub, designed as a refuge for women who are cancer survivors, officially launched yesterday in Nabua, marking a major step forward in support for these individuals. Mereane Vavataga, CEO of Self Care Retreat Fiji, emphasized the significance of this new hub.

“It’s an oasis where women cancer survivors can come when sickness overwhelms them,” said Ms. Vavataga. “They can come to rest here and find nourishment. It’s a safe space where they can discuss their experiences and the challenges they face.”

Established in 2021, the NGO is dedicated to assisting women cancer survivors in their spiritual, emotional, and mental recovery. Ms. Vavataga explained that they host two retreats annually for different groups of survivors to foster relationships and build trust. Upon returning, participants engage in a three-week Bible study program focused on spiritual and emotional healing.

Senior Pastor Manasa Kolivuso of Faith Harvest Church in Nausori, who presided over the opening ceremony, commended the initiative. “Thank you so much for creating this hub so that individuals can find a safe haven, a refuge, where they can connect with others who share their concerns,” he remarked.

During the event, cancer survivor Bulamarau Tikoduadua shared her compelling story. “A year ago today, I was completely paralyzed. My cancer journey was short but aggressive,” she recounted, highlighting the critical need for support networks like the Self Care Retreat Hub. “I’m really grateful for this organization because after cancer treatment can be quite lonely,” she added.

Ms. Vavataga also spoke of the organization’s aspirations to open a hospice, noting that this hub is just the beginning. The Self Care Retreat Fiji is dependent on donations and partnerships to continue its operations. “Even for this building, I had to shave my hair to raise funds,” she shared, referencing her involvement in the ‘Shave it or Save it’ campaign earlier this month.
