Recent research indicates that the local stock exchange is becoming a safer environment for investors, thanks to the implementation of stringent regulations. The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) recently published a comprehensive report on market cleanliness, which investigates insider trading incidents on the NZX over the past two decades.
While year-to-year data may show volatility, the long-term trend points toward a notable decline in market abuse. Chief economist Stuart Johnson highlighted that the improvements can be attributed to extensive international efforts to prevent information leaks, alongside effective local regulatory measures.
He noted a significant drop in abnormal trading behaviors following the enactment of the Financial Markets Conduct Act in 2013. Johnson emphasized that the NZ RegCo, the regulatory body for the NZX, utilizes advanced software called Smart, which aids in monitoring individual trades and detecting any irregularities.
Furthermore, broker dealers and banks play a crucial role by reporting any suspicious behaviors, contributing to a cleaner market overall. Johnson reassured investors and businesses that they can have confidence in the cleanliness of the share market.
“It’s crucial for Kiwi investors to be assured that their investments on the NZX are in a market that is resistant to large-scale manipulation,” he explained. Additionally, he stated that New Zealand businesses seeking to raise capital should view the NZX as a safe and attractive venue for listing and attracting investment.
The FMA plans to continue evaluating market cleanliness on an annual or biannual basis, ensuring the integrity of New Zealand’s stock exchange.
This positive development in the NZX reflects broader trends in financial regulation and market integrity, suggesting a healthier investment climate that could encourage both domestic and foreign investment, thereby supporting economic growth in New Zealand.
In summary, the ongoing efforts to enhance market regulations and oversight are fostering a more trustworthy and secure environment for investors, which is promising for the future of the New Zealand stock market.
