Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu has emphasized the vital role of equipping youth with essential skills for a sustainable future in farming, which is crucial for enhancing the nation’s food production capabilities. During the recent centennial celebration of the Navuso Agriculture Technical Institute (NATI) in Naitasiri, Rayalu addressed the historical challenges between the government and the Methodist Church, which oversees NATI, stating that these differences have previously hampered the institution’s operations and, consequently, food production in Fiji.
Rayalu asserted the importance of reducing the reliance on food imports by nurturing local agricultural practices. He stated, “It is simply not acceptable for Fiji to continue to import foodstuff that could easily be grown locally,” urging a collective effort to provide adequate training and skills to the younger generation in farming.
The minister pointed to various scholarships and incentives that have been made available to encourage youth participation in agriculture, which he hopes will lead to a robust farming industry. He acknowledged past challenges where farming businesses struggled due to failure to meet necessary standards, urging aspiring farmers to leverage government initiatives and education opportunities offered through institutions like NATI.
Rayalu concluded with a hopeful message, asserting that successful trainee farmers could attract potential investors willing to finance their farming operations, thus creating a more sustainable agricultural landscape in Fiji.
This focus on youth training not only addresses immediate food security issues but also plants the seeds for long-term agricultural sustainability and economic growth. By investing in education and training, Fiji can create a thriving agricultural sector that ultimately benefits the entire nation.
